Hi,
Let’s be honest. Sometimes running feels like the magic answer.
You start running, and suddenly you’re drinking less, eating better, sleeping more. The old habits you wanted to leave behind fade into the background because running becomes your new focus.
You feel
like you’ve finally cracked the code.
I’ve been there. In fact, I thought I had it all figured out.
Running became my solution to everything... stress, weight, confidence, health. And for a while, it worked.
But then life happened. I hit setbacks, lost my rhythm, and before I knew it, the good habits slipped away too.
Over time I have realised something important:
If you build everything on
one single habit, it can all fall apart when life gets messy.
Running is a brilliant tool for transformation, but it’s not an all-or-nothing deal. You don’t lose everything just because you’ve lost momentum for a while.
Here’s what I’ve learned (and am still learning):
It’s okay to pause. Life will throw curveballs. Illness, injury, fatigue, or just plain burnout. Pausing doesn’t mean you’ve failed, it just
means you’re human.
You can start again - gently. Building back up isn’t about punishment or guilt. It’s about small steps, walking when you need to, and remembering why you started in the first place.
Running doesn’t need to be perfect to be powerful. A short walk is still a win. A slow run counts. Just getting your shoes on is progress.
Don’t tie your entire identity to one habit. You’re
not “only doing well” when you’re running consistently. You’re still you. Still worthy. Still on the journey.
A little reflection for this week:
Have you ever used running to replace other habits?
How do you handle it when running isn’t possible?
What would “progress over perfection” look like for you right now?
If this resonates, come and chat with us in the Runners Gateway Clubhouse. We’re all in this together, and sometimes just saying “me too” is the thing that helps most.
Your run starts here. Again and again, if it needs to. And that’s okay.
See you out there,
Gary
